RESUMO

The Mexican Caribbean contributes significantly to Mexico's gross national product. The number of tourists declined from 16.7 million in 2019 to 8.8 million in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a rapid recovery of 13.5 million in 2021. Wastewater discharge is the primary contamination source associated with the tourism sector's demand for goods and services. Water quality could improve due to fewer tourists arriving during the COVID-19 sanitary emergency. This study aimed to quantify ammonium concentrations at eleven locations to evaluate water quality during the sanitary restriction due to the pandemic in the Mexican Caribbean. The ammonium concentrations were 85 % (Nov-2019), 89 % (Feb-2020), and 86 % (Feb-2021) higher than in Nov-2020, where six of the eleven sampled stations were below the detection limit (0.15 µM). Lower ammonium concentrations coincide with the sanitary restriction period and a decrease in affluent tourists.

RESUMO

Dopamine is unable to access the central nervous system through the bloodstream. Only its precursor can do so, and with an effectiveness below 100% of the dose administered, as it is metabolized before crossing the blood-brain barrier. In this study, we describe a new solid lipid nanocarrier system designed and developed for dopamine. The nanoparticles were prepared by the melt-emulsification method and then coated with chitosan. The nanocarriers developed had a droplet size of about 250 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.2, a positive surface charge (+30 mV), and a percentage encapsulation efficiency of 36.3 ± 5.4. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy verified uniformity of particle size with spherical morphology. Various types of tests were performed to confirm that the nanoparticles designed are suitable for carrying dopamine through the blood-brain barrier. In vitro tests demonstrated the ability of these nanocarriers to pass through endothelial cell monolayers without affecting their integrity. This study shows that the formulation of dopamine in chitosan-coated solid lipid nanoparticles is a potentially viable formulation strategy to achieve the bioavailability of the drug for the treatment of Parkinson's disease in the central nervous system.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chitosan is a cheap, accessible, nontoxic, biocompatible, and biodegradable compound. Also, this polysaccharide possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Consequently, a wide range of chitosan applications in the dentistry field has been explored. This work aimed to conduct a systematic review to address the clinical efficacy of chitosan for the treatment of oral mucositis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The design of the included studies were observational studies, randomized clinical trials (RCT), and non-randomized clinical trials (non-RCT), whereas, a series of cases, in vivo, and in vitro studies were excluded. The search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source, and ClinicalTrials. Gray literature was searched at Google Scholar. Relevant data from all included studies were recorded. The risk of bias (using RoB 2) and the quality (using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation, GRADE) assessments were carried out. RESULTS: From the 8413 records screened, 5 clinical trials fully met the eligibility criteria, which comprised a total of 192 participants suffering oral lesions and pain related to oral mucositis. 100% of the included studies exhibited a high risk of bias. The quality of the studies was between low and very low. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the included studies suggest that chitosan can diminish pain and improve the healing of ulcers in oral mucositis. However, there is no conclusive evidence of chitosan as a superior treatment for oral mucositis compared with other current therapies.

RESUMO

The conservation of Mexican Caribbean Ecosystems (MCE) involves ensuring their capacity to provide resources and ecosystem services to society. Monitoring programs are necessary to establish their management and ensure their sustainability. Thalassia testudinum is the community used to determine anthropogenic influence, in which wastewater is the primary anthropogenic nitrogen source. The extensive amount of pelagic sargassum that enters the area and its decomposition may be additional nitrogen sources in MCE. In the present study, the δ15N in T. testudinum was examined from 2009 to 2019 to infer the nitrogen contribution from pelagic sargassum to MCE. T. testudinum δ15N values showed significant depletion from June/October 2014 to 2019 concerning previous periods. Pelagic sargassum was an alternative nitrogen source, and its leaching reduced T. testudinum δ15N values in MCE.

RESUMO

Water polluted by discarded heavy metals such as lead is creating a global pollution problem. In this work, adsorption of Pb(II) was realized in batch studies by a hybrid membrane of cellulose acetate with ZnO particles. First, ZnO particles were prepared by precipitation and immobilized on the membrane. The hybrid membrane was elaborated by interfacial polymerization. The structure and surface were characterized based on Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Batch experiments were carried out under different conditions where the number of particles of ZnO present in the membrane and the pH of the aqueous solution were varied. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were evaluated in the best adsorption conditions. Data fitted well with a Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 15.55 mg·g-1, which was similar for this type of materials. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy showed that the process was spontaneous and favorable. The hybrid membrane was evaluated in simulated wastewater of the battery industry with a superior efficiency of up to 97%; without the medium, it did not generate interference. These results suggest that Pb(II) removal by hybrid membrane is possible.

RESUMO

The resident and tourist population in the Mexican Caribbean has grown exponentially, increasing the availability of dissolved inorganic nutrients in coastal waters through submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Recently, a new massive drift of Sargassum spp. has occurred that can provide new organic matter and enrich coastal water with nutrients. In different sites in the Mexican Caribbean, the chemical composition of the water was analyzed, and the δ15N of Thalassia testudinum was determined between 2016 and 2019. Evidence of SGD was observed in Akumal Bay due to high silicate concentrations and its negative correlation with salinity. Seasonal and interannual variation in NH4+ concentration was observed at these sites. In October 2018, SGD contributed ∼70 times more nitrogen and ∼194 times more phosphorus than the decomposition of the pelagic macroalgae Sargassum spp. The δ15N data showed that Akumal Bay received nitrogen of anthropogenic origin and that nitrogen fixation processes or probably assimilation of nitrogen of the leachates of pelagic Sargassum spp were dominant at Mahahual and Xahuayxol.

RESUMO

The efficient use of natural resources without negative repercussions to the environment has encouraged the incursion of nanotechnology to provide viable alternatives in diverse areas, including crop management. Agriculture faces challenges due to the combination of different abiotic stresses where nanotechnology can contribute with promising applications. In this context, several studies report that the application of nanoparticles and nanomaterials positively affects crop productivity through different strategies such as green synthesis of nanoparticles, plant targeted protection through the application of nanoherbicides and nanofungicides, precise and constant supply of nutrients through nanofertilizers, and tolerance to abiotic stress (e.g., low or high temperatures, drought, salinity, low or high light intensities, UV-B, metals in soil) by several mechanisms such as activation of the antioxidant enzyme system that alleviates oxidative stress. Thus, the present review focuses on the benefits of NPs against these type of stress and their possible action mechanisms derived from the interaction between nanoparticles and plants, and their potential application for improving agricultural practices.

RESUMO

Methyl parathion is an organophosphorus pesticide widely employed worldwide to control pests in agricultural and domestic environments. However, due to its intensive use, high toxicity, and environmental persistence, methyl parathion is recognized as an important ecosystem and human health threat, causing severe environmental pollution events and numerous human poisoning and deaths each year. Therefore, identifying and characterizing microorganisms capable of fully degrading methyl parathion and its degradation metabolites is a crucial environmental task for the bioremediation of pesticide-polluted sites. Burkholderia zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 is a bacterial strain isolated from agricultural soils capable of immediately hydrolyzing methyl parathion at a concentration of 50 mg/L and degrading the 100% of the released p-nitrophenol in a 12-hour lapse when cultured in minimal salt medium. In this study, a comparative proteomic analysis was conducted in the presence and absence of methyl parathion to evaluate the biological mechanisms implicated in the methyl parathion biodegradation and resistance by the strain B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3. In each treatment, the changes in the protein expression patterns were evaluated at three sampling times, zero, three, and nine hours through the use of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE), and the differentially expressed proteins were identified by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). The proteomic analysis allowed the identification of 72 proteins with differential expression, 35 proteins in the absence of the pesticide, and 37 proteins in the experimental condition in the presence of methyl parathion. The identified proteins are involved in different metabolic processes such as the carbohydrate and amino acids metabolism, carbon metabolism and energy production, fatty acids ß-oxidation, and the aromatic compounds catabolism, including enzymes of the both p-nitrophenol degradation pathways (Hydroquinone dioxygenase and Hydroxyquinol 1,2 dioxygenase), as well as the overexpression of proteins implicated in cellular damage defense mechanisms such as the response and protection of the oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species defense, detoxification of xenobiotics, and DNA repair processes. According to these data, B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 overexpress different proteins related to aromatic compounds catabolism and with the p-nitrophenol  degradation pathways, the higher expression levels observed in the two subunits of the enzyme Hydroquinone dioxygenase, suggest a preferential use of the Hydroquinone metabolic pathway in the p-nitrophenol degradation process. Moreover the overexpression of several proteins implicated in the oxidative stress response, xenobiotics detoxification, and DNA damage repair reveals the mechanisms employed by B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 to counteract the adverse effects caused by the methyl parathion and p-nitrophenol exposure.

Objectives. To study whether there are age-related differences in the clinical effects of cannabis poisoning and whether any age differences found are also related to sex or coingestion of alcohol. Methods. Descriptive observational study of patients treated in 11 emergency departments for symptoms related to cannabis use. We collected data on 11 clinical manifestations and used a restricted cubic spline model to analyze their relative frequency according to age. We also looked for any interactions between the findings and patient sex or alcohol coingestion. Results. A total of 949 patients were studied. The mean age was 29 years, 74% were males, and 39% had also consumed alcohol. We identified 3 symptom patterns related to age. One set of symptoms (vomiting, headache, convulsions, and hypotension) remained stable across all ages. Manifestations that increased in the middle of the age range studied were agitation and aggressivity, psychosis, palpitations and hallucinations. Chest pain and hypertension increased in older-aged patients. The frequencies of palpitations, vomiting, and headache differed according to sex. These manifestations held constant in males but were markedly higher in young-adult females. Coingestion of alcohol was associated with agitation and aggressivity (in 34.0% vs 23.4%, P < .001), fewer reports of palpitations (in 9.8% vs 15.6%, P = .01), less anxiety (in 20.7% vs 27.8%, P = .01), less psychosis (in 10.3% vs 16.6%, P = .007), and less chest pain (in 3.8% vs 9.5%, P = .001). The only significant interaction between age and alcohol coingestion occurred with respect to vomiting and psychosis. Conclusions. There are age-related differences in the acute clinical manifestations of cannabis poisoning requiring emergency hospital care. Sex and coingestion of alcohol modify the relationship between age and frequency of some manifestations. (AU)

RESUMO

Metabolic reprogramming is typical in cancerous cells and is required for proliferation and cellular survival. In addition, oncoproteins of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are involved in this process. This study evaluated the relationship between glucose transporter I (GLUT1), lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA), and monocarboxylate transporter type 4 (MCT4) expression and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and invasive cervical carcinoma (ICC) with HR-HPV infection. The protein expression was evaluated in women with CIN I (n=20), CIN II/III (n=16), or ICC (n=24) by immunohistochemistry. The protein expression was analyzed qualitatively by van Zummeren score and quantitatively by Image ProPlus 6 software. LDHA expression increases in HPV-16 infection. In the CIN I group, GLUT1 immunostaining has a 35% protein expression at the membrane level at more than two thirds of the epithelium, which increased by 21.25% more in CIN II/III in more than two thirds of the epithelium. While LDHA and MCT4 in CIN I mostly do not present immunostaining, or this was only limited to the basal stratum, this expression is increased in CIN II/III and ICC cases. The GLUT1, LDHA, and MCT4 expression increased in ICC. The overexpression in high-grade CIN with HR-HPV infection shows a higher risk for cervical carcinoma progression.

RESUMO

Current agricultural practices for vegetable production are unsustainable, and the use of certain nanomaterials has shown significant potential for either plant growth promotion or defense induction in crop species. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the possible effects of two SBA nano-structured silica materials differing in morphology; SBA-15, with porous structure in parallel and with a highly ordered hexagonal array and SBA-16, with spheric nano-cages located in cubic arrays, as plant growth promoters/eustressors on chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) during cultivation under greenhouse conditions. The study was carried out at three foliarly applied concentrations (20, 50 and 100 ppm) of either SBA materials to determine effects on seed germination, seedling growth, plant performance and cold tolerance under greenhouse. Phytotoxicity tests were carried out using higher concentrations (100, 1000 and 200 ppm) applied by dipping or spraying onto chili pepper plants. Deionized water controls were included. The results showed that the SBA materials did not affect seed germination; however, SBA-15 at 50 ppm and 100 ppm applied by imbibition significantly increased seedling height (up to 8-fold) and provided enhanced growth performance in comparison with controls under select treatment regimes. Weekly application of SBA-15 at 20 ppm significantly increased stem diameter and cold tolerance; however, SBA-16 showed significant decreases in plant height (20 ppm biweekly applied) and stem diameter (20, 50 and 100 ppm biweekly applied). The results demonstrate that both SBA materials provided hormetic effects in a dose dependent manner on chili pepper production and protection to cold stress. No phytotoxic response was evident. These findings suggested the nanostructured mesoporous silica have potential as a sustainable amendment strategy to increase crop production under stress-inducing cultivation conditions.

RESUMO

Potentially toxic metals and metalloids present in mining residues can affect ecosystems, particularly plant growth and development. In this study we evaluated heavy metal (Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb) and As contents in maize (Zea mays L) plants grown in soils collected near (40 m), at intermediate (400 m) and remote (3000 m) distances from mine tailings near Taxco City, Mexico. Soils sampled near and at intermediate sites from the tailings contained high levels of heavy metals which were 3- to 55-fold higher compared to the control samples. Heavy metal and As content in plants reflected the soil contamination being the greatest for most studied elements in root samples followed by stems, leaves, and kernels. Though plants were capable of completing their life cycle and producing the seeds, high bioaccumulation levels had a strong impact negatively on plant development. Abnormalities in the organs like malformations in reproductive structures (tassel and ear), reduction in the phytomer number and the plant height were present. Microscopic studies and morphometric analyses suggest that strongly affected plant growth result from negative and synergistic action of heavy metals and As in soils on cell growth and cell production. This study showed that maize grown near mine tailings accumulated high levels of heavy metals and As which decrease significantly plant yield and could be dangerous if it is consumed by animals and humans.

RESUMO

Methyl parathion (MP) is a highly toxic organophosphorus pesticide associated with water, soil, and air pollution events. The identification and characterization of microorganisms capable of biodegrading pollutants are an important environmental task for bioremediation of pesticide impacted sites. The strain Burkholderia cenocepacia CEIB S5-2 is a bacterium capable of efficiently hydrolyzing MP and biodegrade p-nitrophenol (PNP), the main MP hydrolysis product. Due to the high PNP toxicity over microbial living forms, the reports on bacterial PNP biodegradation are scarce. According to the genomic data, the MP- and PNP-degrading ability observed in B. cenocepacia CEIB S5-2 is related to the presence of the methyl parathion-degrading gene (mpd) and the gene cluster pnpABA'E1E2FDC, which include the genes implicated in the PNP degradation. In this work, the transcriptomic analysis of the strain in the presence of MP revealed the differential expression of 257 genes, including all genes implicated in the PNP degradation, as well as a set of genes related to the sensing of environmental changes, the response to stress, and the degradation of aromatic compounds, such as translational regulators, membrane transporters, efflux pumps, and oxidative stress response genes. These findings suggest that these genes play an important role in the defense against toxic effects derived from the MP and PNP exposure. Therefore, B. cenocepacia CEIB S5-2 has a great potential for application in pesticide bioremediation approaches due to its biodegradation capabilities and the differential expression of genes for resistance to MP and PNP.

RESUMO

Population growth around water bodies is deteriorating environmental quality. The benthic foraminiferal and trace element concentration in a pair of short sediment cores were used to establish the quality of the sedimentary environment in a tropical coastal lagoon in the southwestern Gulf of California. From 25 cm depth towards the surface of the sediment core, Ammonia beccarii was dominant over nontolerant species and the concentrations of V, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu, Hg and Pb in the sediments increased compared with the lower depth intervals. This finding suggests a deterioration in the environmental quality of the lagoon since 1980, associated with an increase in the sizes of the population and vehicle fleet in the city of La Paz, Baja California Sur, and with the operation of three fossil fuel-based thermoelectric plants since 1985.

RESUMO

In vitro studies have suggested that terguride blocks the contractile and relaxant responses produced by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) via 5-HT2A/2B receptors. This study has now investigated terguride's blocking properties on central/peripheral 5-HT2 receptors in anaesthetized or pithed rats. Male Wistar anaesthetized/pithed rats were cannulated for recording blood pressure and heart rate and for i.v. administration of several compounds. In both groups of rats, i.v. bolus injections of 5-HT or (±)-DOI (a 5-HT2 receptor agonist; 1-1000 µg/kg) produced dose-dependent increases in diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. These responses were dose-dependently antagonized by terguride (10-3000 µg/kg). In anaesthetized rats, i.v. bolus injections of BW723C86 (a 5-HT2B receptor agonist; 1-1000 µg/kg) produced dose-dependent increases in diastolic blood pressure and not dose-dependent increases in heart rate, while in pithed rats, these responses were attenuated. The vasopressor responses elicited by BW723C86 in anaesthetized rats were dose-dependently blocked by terguride (10-300 µg/kg), whereas its the tachycardic responses were dose-independently blocked. These results, taken together, suggest that terguride behaved as an antagonist at the 5-HT2 receptors located in the central nervous system and (or) the systemic vasculature. This is the first evidence demonstrating that terguride can block central/peripheral 5-HT2 receptors mediating cardiovascular responses in anaesthetized or pithed rats.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: To compare efficacy and safety of a home-made platelet-rich plasma (PRP) solution versus hyaluronic acid in patients with hip osteoarthritis not responding to conservative treatment and to correlate cellular composition of PRP to clinical outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a phase III clinical trial, double-blinded, controlled and randomised into two treatment groups (PRP and hyaluronic acid). Patients received one hip ultrasound-guided injection. Follow up was 12 months. Pain was assessed using VAS score, HHS and WOMAC were used as functional scores, analgesia, adverse events, cellular components (PRP group) in peripheral blood and in PRP were recorded. Clinical response was assessed using OARSI criteria. RESULTS: Seventy-four patients were included. Both groups improved in VAS, WOMAC and HHS score and reduced the amount of analgesia (p<.05). Significant differences were seen at 1 year post-treatment in HHS score (PRP 70.9 [3.7-58], hyaluronic acid 60.2[43-74.2] p<.05). No adverse events were observed in none of the groups. Platelet concentration was different between responders and non-responders (at 1 month, non-responders 449[438-578] x103 platelets/μl versus responders 565 [481-666] x103 platelets/μl, p<.044). There was a correlation between leukocytes concentration and clinical scores (VAS at six months, r=0.748, p<.013, WOMAC at 6 months r=0.748, p <.013). Patients with early stage hip OA showed higher response rate to PRP compared with late stage (11.51 OR, 95%CI 2.34-50.65, p<.03). CONCLUSIONS: Platelet-rich plasma injection improved hip function, reduced pain and the use of analgesia. RESUMO

Pesticides are xenobiotic molecules necessary to control pests in agriculture, home, and industry. However, water and soil can become contaminated as a consequence of their extensive use. Therefore, because of its eco-friendly characteristics and efficiency, bioremediation of contaminated sites is a powerful tool with advantages over other kinds of treatments. For an efficient pesticides bioremediation, it is necessary to take into account different aspects related to the microbial metabolism and physiology. In this respect, OMICs studies such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are essential to generate relevant information about the genes and proteins involved in pesticide degradation, the metabolites generated by microbial pesticide degradation, and the cellular strategies to contend against stress caused by pesticide exposition. Pesticides as organochlorines and organophosphorus are the more commonly studied using OMIC approaches. To date, many genomes of microorganisms capable of degrading pesticides have been published, mainly bacterial strains from Burkholderia, Pseudomonas, and Rhodococcus genera. Following the genomic reports, transcriptomic studies, using microarrays and more recently next-generation sequencing technology RNA-Seq, in pesticide microbial degradation are the most numerous. Proteomics, metabolomics, as well as studies that combine different OMIC are gained interest. This review aims to describe a brief overview of pesticide biodegradation mechanisms; new tools to study microorganisms in natural environments; basic concepts of the OMICs approaches; as well as advances in methodologies associated with the analysis of that tools. Additionally, the most recent reports on genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics during the degradation of pesticides are also analyzed.

RESUMO

Water quality in the Mexican Caribbean is affected by increases in tourism infrastructure and poor wastewater treatment. Additionally, karst geomorphology facilitates the infiltration of organic matter to subterranean water and coastal fresh water that originates from submarine groundwater discharges (SGDs), altering the environment. The tourism infrastructure grows at different rates along the Caribbean coast, characterizing zones with diverse levels of tourism impact. The aim of this work was to measure nutrient concentrations in superficial coastal water and fresh water to evaluate the water quality through different zones along a gradient from intermediate- (Riviera Maya) to low-tourism (Costa Maya) development regions. Furthermore, this study aimed to compare the measured nutrient concentrations with the Mexican ecological criteria of water quality 001/89 (CE-CCA-001/89), detect possible contributions by SGDs, and determine whether the nitrogen (N) sources are anthropogenic using stable nitrogen isotopes in the seagrass Thalassia testudinum. According to the results, nutrient concentrations (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, and orthophosphate) differed significantly between the Riviera Maya and Costa Maya (P = 0.0001). Sites such as Shambala, Chávez, Tankah, Mahahual 2, Tulum, Akumal, and Xahuayxol exceeded the upper levels set by the CE-CCA-001/89. Tankah, Shambala, and Chávez were influenced by SGDs. The nitrogen isotope ratio in Akumal and Tulum coast water shows that they are under N loading derived to the sewage percentage of δ15N in Akumal, Tulum, and Mahahual, showing that these sites suffer N loading due to sewage. Our study recommends continuous monitoring and coastal characterization to detect SGD and to regulate, treat, and dispose of sewage.
